Bursary Application

The Global Alcohol Policy Conference (GAPC) Organizing Committee is delighted to invite applications for bursaries to attend the GAPC 2026 Conference taking place in Rio de Janeiro, 8-10 April 2026.

This will be the 8th Global Alcohol Policy conference which is a key policy forum for alcohol policy makers, advocates, researchers, civil society activists and practitioners globally.

A limited number of bursaries are available to attend the 2026 conference. We are particularly interested in applications from low- and middle-income countries and first nations/indigenous people.

What will the bursary cover?

Full or partial bursaries are available.

  • A full bursary will cover economy flights to and Rio de Janeiro, airport transfers in Rio de Janeiro, accommodation, and conference fees. It does not cover home-country transport, visa costs or a per diem.
  • Partial bursaries may include registration only; accommodation and flights only; flights only or accommodation only.

Bursary Selection

Selection of bursaries will take the following into consideration:

  • The applicant must have an abstract accepted for oral presentation.
  • The applicant is working on/or researching policy shifts in areas such as controls on alcohol marketing, pricing policies and retail sales of alcohol.
  • Conference will be valuable to applicants, both professionally and personally.

Bursary expectations

Please take note of the following expectations for bursary winners.

  • Bursary recipients must have valid travel documents and are responsible for obtaining appropriate travel approvals to attend the conference.
  • A full bursary will cover economy flights to and from Rio de Janeiro (arranged by the GAPC2026 Organisers), airport transfers in Rio de Janeiro, accommodation, and conference fees. It does not cover home-country transport, visa costs or a per diem.
  • Partial bursaries can include registration only; accommodation and flights only; flights only or accommodation only.
  • Bursary recipients may be held liable for any/all expense incurred if the awardee does not attend the conference. Note that cancellations must be communicated in writing one month before the event to avoid liability costs.
  • Priority will be given to applicants from low- and middle-income countries and first nations/indigenous people who will not be able to otherwise attend the conference.

During the GAPC 2026 Conference

  • Bursary recipients will be asked to act as GAPC 2026 Ambassadors through live tweeting of sessions, and sharing posts and photos on Facebook, Instagram and BlueSky. A social media plan will be shared with you prior to the event.
  • Bursary recipients will be asked to provide a blog post of their learning and experience at the GAPC 2026. They will be required to complete a short evaluation form after the conference
