Indigenous peoples worldwide experience significant and intergenerational alcohol-related harm and inequity. At both local and global policy levels, this unacceptable state of affairs generally remains poorly understood, with Indigenous-led efforts to control alcohol use and effects in their communities largely thwarted or diminished by commercial interests and inadequate government responses.
In recognition of this situation, and the right of Indigenous peoples to lead and define their way forward, GAPA is pleased to support an Indigenous pre-conference event at ExpoRio CIDADE NOVA on 7 April 2026. This event will provide a forum for Indigenous and First Nation peoples and others interested in Indigenous alcohol harm reduction to come together, network, share ideas, and discuss matters in the alcohol space that are of importance to Indigenous peoples. It will also provide an opportunity for Indigenous and First Nation peoples to revisit and build on the work of previous Indigenous forums and to plan forward.

We are combining the sessions (initially promoted) into one integrated event. Utilising an Indigenous process, we intend to create a space within the event for deep discussion and the sharing of perspectives and experiences of alcohol harm in Indigenous communities and ideas for future action. The event will start at 10am on 7 April and finish at 1pm with lunch to follow. Please arrive at the conference venue by 9.45am so that we can begin on time.

Industry interference is the leading barrier to developing effective alcohol policy, while managing conflict of interest is critical to strengthening health governance. This interactive event aims to enhance capacity to develop and apply policy instruments that can minimise industry interference across policy, advocacy and research contexts. It creates space to share experiences, identify innovations, highlight emergent best practice, and promote learning across commercial determinants of health.

RESET Alcohol is an initiative that brings together national governments, civil society, researchers, and global leaders in public health and alcohol policy to develop and implement evidence-based alcohol policies primarily focused on raising taxes.
